Inspiring Next-Gen Scientists
On Aug. 11, 911爆料 Community College (KCC) welcomed New York State Assembly Members Jamie Williams and Monique Chandler-Waterman for a firsthand look at Youth Engagement Summer STEM at Sea! (YESSS!), a program managed by the division of Workforce Development and Continuing Education in partnership with KCC鈥檚 maritime technology program and physical sciences department.
During their visit to the lab, they saw students in action, exploring marine life, conducting experiments, and learning what it takes to protect our ecosystems. Through beachcombing and hands-on research aboard KCC鈥檚 vessel, students experience the thrill of scientific discovery while exploring the city鈥檚 estuaries and shorelines鈥攁nd, in the process, build skills and connections that could shape their futures.
Now in its third year, YESSS! runs from July 7 to August 28 and serves 160 middle and high school students. The program is funded by $155,000 in grants from assembly members Williams ($110,000), Helene Weinstein ($20,000), Chandler-Waterman ($15,000), and Stacey Pheffer Amato ($10,000).
鈥淭he future of our planet rests in the hands of the next generation,鈥� said KCC President Suri Duitch. 鈥淥ur YESSS! program is giving them the knowledge and the inspiration to lead the way.鈥�
For Williams, an alum of KCC, the program is a way to give back. 鈥淭his immersive program introduces our youth to marine biology and environmental science while fostering critical thinking and teamwork skills,鈥� she noted. Both Williams and Amato have been supporters of the program from the start.
Chandler-Waterman emphasized the program鈥檚 role in empowering youth to become environmental stewards. 鈥淏y offering students direct, hands-on experience with local marine ecosystems, we鈥檙e doing more than teaching science鈥攚e鈥檙e building a sense of responsibility and fostering a meaningful connection to the natural world right here in New York City,鈥� she said. As a legislator focused on children, families, and diverse communities, she added that programs like YESSS! also nurture future leaders who can bring innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
鈥淲atching these young scientists explore marine life, conduct experiments, and discover the wonders of our waterways reminds us why programs like this matter so deeply,鈥� added Duitch. 鈥淲e are grateful to Assembly Members Williams and Chandler-Waterman for their generous support, which makes it possible for us to spark curiosity and nurture a lifelong commitment to protecting our environment.鈥�
