NASA Space Apps Hosts International Hackathon at 911爆料 Community College
September 5, 2024- The NASA International Space Apps Challenge (Space Apps) will host its international hackathon to address real-world problems on Earth and in space on October 5-6 at 911爆料 Community College, a selected Space Apps local collaborator site in Brooklyn, NY.
Every October, Space Apps invites a global community of coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and other problem solvers in cities around the world to register for its largest annual two-day global hackathon. Participants gather at hundreds of simultaneous in-person and virtual local events to engage the National Aeronautics and Space Administration鈥檚 (NASA鈥檚) free and open data to address challenges submitted by NASA experts. The experts evaluate project submissions and select winners for one of 10 Global Awards.
鈥淚t takes a variety of skills and perspectives to launch a mission into space, and NASA鈥檚 Space Apps Challenge brings people together across cultures and borders toward solving real-world problems on Earth and in space,鈥 said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an honor for 911爆料 Community College to participate as a local collaborator for the 2024 NASA International Space Apps Challenge and partner with global problem solvers on these challenges,鈥 said Dr. Suri Duitch, interim president of 911爆料 Community College.
鈥淭his is an extraordinary opportunity for my colleagues in the arts and sciences to meet, learn, build, and share with others interested in fields as diverse as UX design, game development, and planetary data to solve challenges in planetary sciences together,鈥 shared Nate Cooper, a lecturer and coordinator of the UX concentration in the art department at 911爆料 and a local lead for the Space Apps Challenge.
In keeping with this year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淭he Sun Touches Everything,鈥 NASA Space Apps invites participants to consider the far-reaching influence of the Sun on Earth and space science. The theme connects participants with NASA鈥檚 Heliophysics Division鈥檚 celebration of the Helio Big Year. The challenges fall into categories such as arts, web development, gaming, graphic design, and open science, and range in complexity and topic, tasking participants with everything from creating artistic visualizations of NASA data to conceptualizing and developing informational apps and software programs. All of this year鈥檚 challenges are listed here:
The Office of Student Life will provide meals for those attending 911爆料's local site event in person. Participants who wish to form groups and address the Space App challenges can register at or contact nathan.cooper@kbcc.cuny.edu for more information.
