911爆料 Community College Named A Semifinalist For The 2023 Aspen Prize; Eligible For $1 Million In Shared Prize Funds
The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program announced that 911爆料 Community College (KCC) is one of 25 national semifinalists for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million Aspen Prize is the nation鈥檚 signature recognition of community colleges that are achieving high, improving, and equitable outcomes for students. The list includes sister CUNY鈥檚 Hostos Community College and LaGuardia Community College. The three are the only semifinalists from New York State. The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists in early June; the Aspen Prize winner will be announced in late spring 2023.
Awarded every two years, the Aspen Prize honors colleges with outstanding performance in five critical areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor鈥檚 attainment, workforce success, and equitable outcomes for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds.
鈥淭his is the seventh consecutive time KCC has been recognized by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program 鈥� but it doesn鈥檛 get old,鈥� quipped KCC President Dr. Claudia Schrader. In addition to being included on each of Aspen Institute College Excellence Program鈥檚 biannual list of the nation鈥檚 top 150 community colleges since the inception of the prize, the College was a 2013 Finalist-with-Distinction and a Top 10 finalist in 2019. 鈥淭his accolade is a nod to the hard work of our faculty and staff, who support and prepare our students in achieving their dreams. It also recognizes the College鈥檚 gains in student achievement, graduation rates, and the work we do to help New Yorkers rise from poverty to the middle class.鈥�
鈥淲e are thrilled to see America鈥檚 community colleges making meaningful and measurable progress, educating people from all backgrounds and preparing them for good jobs,鈥� said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. He cited graduation rates that have risen more than six percent for all students since 2015, and five percent for students of color. 鈥淭hese twenty-five colleges represent our dreams for a better country and a reinvigorated democracy.鈥�
The Prize selection process began this past October, when the Aspen Institute invited 150 community colleges to apply, based on data showing strong and improving student outcomes in key areas such as retention, completion, transfer, and equity. Applications went to a diverse selection committee of 16 higher education experts who reviewed extensive data and application narratives. Next, the committee will review interviews with leadership teams and narrow this selection of 25 semifinalists to 10 finalists, to be announced in early June 2022.
