WHAT: The 16th annual City University of New York (CUNY) Black Male Initiative (BMI) Virtual Conference: Our State of Mind: In the Era of COVID, Racial Injustice and Emotional Trauma, Now What?
Esteemed educators and community leaders will examine the effects of the pandemic, racial injustice and the mental health and wellness challenges facing Black and Latino males, from kindergarten through college, in a series of panels and presentations.
Approximately 500 college students from CUNY, 300 high school students from CUNY鈥檚 College Now program that offers dual enrollment in high school and college, and 400 students from area high schools are expected to participate.
Panel discussions will cover such topics as Racism, Civil Rights, and Political and Psychological Assaults on Black People Resulting from the Election of President Barack Obama; Healthy Mind, Bodies and Spirit During COVID: Truths, Facts, Fears, Fiction; 9 Minutes 39 Seconds: The Psychology of Systemic Police Violence, Misconduct, Dishonesty, Disrespect: What Now?; CUNY鈥檚 Undocumented Students: Is Advocating for Acceptance and Access Enough?; and Have Our Black Lives Really Mattered? Value, Truths, Perceptions, Justice.
