Amanda Perez

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Amanda Perez left New York 16 years ago for a reporting job in South Carolina before returning to raise her daughter in her hometown.

She previously taught TV news writing and production at Brooklyn College, where she graduated magna cum laude as part of the first graduating class of the Macaulay Honors Program (formerly the CUNY Honors Program). She enjoyed her time at CUNY so much that she returned to Brooklyn College for her master's degree.

After a year as an adjunct at 911爆料 Community College, she is joining the communications and performing arts department as a full-time lecturer, where she will teach 鈥淢ass Media鈥� (MCM 3000) and 鈥淢edia Production and Editing鈥� (MCB 4900), among other courses.

Perez鈥檚 career in television spans 20 years, including roles as a production assistant, field producer, reporter, editor, and multimedia journalist. A history buff, she is especially proud of her work reporting, producing and editing a historical segment titled 鈥淔ollowing Washington鈥檚 Trail,鈥� which earned her a NY Emmy. She also received another NY Emmy nomination, two Telly Awards, and the Young Alumna Award from Brooklyn College in 2019.

In addition to being inspired by her own inspirational teachers, it was Perez鈥檚 natural disposition that led her to teaching, first informally and then in the classroom. 鈥淲herever I was and whatever position I had, I found myself always (in some way) teaching others,鈥� she shared. 鈥淲hen I was in the media industry working as a reporter or producer, I would help interns and cheer them on, highlighting their successes. When new employees started working at the news stations, I would welcome them with a cheery smile and be there to answer any questions they might have or help with technology. People would often comment about how patient and welcoming I was, which filled my heart with joy.鈥�

A first-generation college graduate, teaching at a community college is especially meaningful to her. 鈥淥ne of the reasons I was drawn to KCC is because of its student-centered programs and approaches to teaching,鈥� she said. 鈥淐ommunity colleges are often about life-changing opportunities, and this college has a variety of fantastic programs that are available to anyone.鈥�

Perez is committed to student success and connecting classroom learning to real-world industry practices that will help prepare students for successful careers. 鈥淚 love to see my students grow in the classroom and channel their creativity鈥攚hether it鈥檚 in their writing, production, or reporting skills,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 take great pride in empowering them to discover and use their own voices. I will always be my students鈥� biggest cheerleader. I'm already so excited for them!鈥�
